Shaker Doors

Shaker doors are internal doors defined by a recessed centre panel framed by horizontal rails and vertical stiles — a style that suits contemporary, Hamptons and coastal interiors equally. Ideal Barn Doors supplies shaker doors in 1, 2, 3 and 4-panel configurations, white primed and ready to paint, in standard heights of 2040mm and 2340mm. Each door can be installed as a traditional hinged door or paired with barn door hardware for a sliding application.

How to Choose Your Shaker Door

Panel count is the first decision. A 1-panel shaker door has a single large recessed rectangle and reads as clean and modern — well suited to contemporary and minimalist interiors. A 2-panel door splits the face horizontally and suits transitional styles. A 3-panel and 4-panel door carry a more traditional character, often associated with Hamptons and colonial revival interiors. The Colonial 4P (RD06) adds a cross-rail detail that suits period-inspired homes.

The second decision is installation method. All RD series shaker doors can be hung as traditional hinged doors using three hinges for stability, or paired with a barn door hardware kit for a sliding installation — useful where swing clearance is limited. Visit our barn door hardware collection to find a compatible track system for your door weight and opening width.

For opening width, measure the rough opening and select the door width closest to that dimension, allowing for your frame and hardware. Standard widths run from 620mm to 870mm. If your opening falls outside this range, contact us to discuss options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shaker door?

A shaker door is an internal door with a recessed panel inset within a frame of horizontal rails and vertical stiles. The style originated with the American Shaker movement and is now one of the most versatile door designs in Australian residential interiors, working equally well in contemporary, Hamptons, coastal and transitional homes.

What is the difference between a 1-panel and a 4-panel shaker door?

A 1-panel shaker door has a single large recessed rectangle spanning most of the door face, giving a minimal, contemporary look. A 4-panel door divides the face into four smaller recessed sections, producing a more traditional character suited to Hamptons and colonial-style interiors. A 3-panel door sits between the two in both visual weight and formality. If you are unsure which suits your space, bring your room dimensions and style reference to any of our three showrooms for a recommendation.

Can shaker doors be used as sliding barn doors?

Yes. All RD series shaker doors are compatible with barn door hardware for a sliding installation. This is a practical choice where there is limited clearance for a door to swing, such as in narrow hallways or smaller bedrooms. Select a hardware kit rated for the weight of your chosen door — visit our barn door hardware collection or contact us to confirm compatibility before ordering.

Are the doors supplied pre-painted or pre-primed?

The doors are supplied white primed. The primed finish is a base coat only and requires a final topcoat in your chosen colour before installation. Sand the surface lightly before applying the topcoat and ensure all edges, including the top and bottom, are sealed to protect against moisture.

What sizes are available, and can the doors be trimmed?

Standard heights are 2040mm and 2340mm. Standard widths are 620mm, 720mm, 770mm, 820mm and 870mm. All doors are 35mm thick. Each door can be trimmed by up to 5mm per side where the lipping is 10mm or more — remove material evenly from both sides. If your opening requires a size outside the standard range, contact us to discuss a custom order.
