French Barn Doors

French barn doors are sliding barn doors with a slim aluminium frame and safety glass panels, so they close off a room while still letting light through. Our range comes with black frames and a choice of clear, translucent, reeded, rain or grey glass, in heights from 2040 to 2400 mm and widths from 720 to 1640 mm. To compare every style we stock, see our full range of sliding barn doors.

Choosing your glass

Clear glass gives the most light and the clearest view between rooms. Translucent glass softens the view for privacy while still letting light through. Reeded glass has a vertical ribbed texture that blurs what is behind it, though shapes can still be seen up close. Rain and grey glass add a decorative pattern or tint. Glass options differ by model, so check each product page for the choices available in your size.

Door thickness and hardware

Depending on the model, our French barn doors are 28 mm or 38 mm thick. They are sold as the door only, so the track and rollers are purchased separately from our barn door hardware range. Choose a kit rated for the weight and thickness of your door, as framed glass panels are heavier than they look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which glass should I choose for a French barn door?

It depends on how much light and privacy you want. Clear glass lets the most light through and keeps the view open. Translucent glass gives the most privacy of our options while still passing light. Reeded glass adds texture and blurs the view, but it is not fully private at close range. Rain and grey glass are decorative choices for a patterned or tinted look.

Which French barn door glass is best for a bathroom or ensuite?

Translucent glass is the best choice of our options for a bathroom, because it gives more privacy than clear or reeded glass. Silhouettes can still show when the bathroom light is on, so think about how private the room needs to be. A barn door also leaves small gaps around its edges, so add a privacy lock and make sure the room is well ventilated.

Do glass barn doors need safety glass under Australian standards?

Yes, glass in doors is an area where safety glass is generally required. In Australia, AS 1288 sets the requirements for selecting and installing glass in buildings, including glass in doors. Our French barn doors use safety glass in an aluminium frame. Because glass doors are heavy, the track must be rated for the door’s weight and fixed into solid structure, and we recommend an installer experienced with glass doors.

Do French barn doors come with the track and hardware?

No. Our French barn doors are sold as the door only, and the track, rollers and other fittings are purchased separately. Choose a kit from our barn door hardware range that is rated for your door’s weight and thickness.
