Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between pine, oak and painted wood barn doors?

The main differences are the timber species, the thickness and whether the door arrives finished. Our plank-style pine barn doors, such as the BD001, are solid pine, 40 mm thick and supplied raw, ready to stain or paint. Oak options such as the ROAK001 are solid American red oak, also 40 mm thick and supplied raw, and sit in our hardwood barn doors range. Painted plank doors arrive finished in red or grey. Construction and thickness can differ between models, so check each product page before ordering.

What sizes do wood barn doors come in, and can I order a custom size?

Most of our wood barn doors come in standard heights of 2040, 2120, 2260 and 2400 mm, with widths from 620 mm up to 2100 mm on models such as the BD001. Size options differ by model, so check the size list on each product page. Custom sizes are available on selected designs. Send us your finished opening width and height, the design you like and your preferred finish, and we will confirm the lead time with your quote.

Do wood barn doors need to be sealed, stained or painted?

Yes. Natural timber barn doors must be sealed, stained or painted before use, and leaving the timber unfinished voids the warranty. Seal any trimmed edges as well as the faces, and repair chips or scratches in the finish promptly so moisture cannot get into the timber.

Will a wood barn door warp or crack, and how do I prevent it?

A solid wood barn door will move slightly with the seasons, which is a natural characteristic of timber rather than a defect. Fine cracks along the grain can appear in dry weather and slight swelling in humid weather, and minor warping of 3 to 5 mm depending on door size falls within the tolerance set out in our solid wood barn door care guide. To limit movement, store the door flat in a dry indoor room, let it acclimatise on site for 48 to 72 hours before hanging, keep indoor humidity between 35 and 65 per cent, and keep it away from heaters, air conditioner vents and direct sunlight.

Can I use a wood barn door in a bathroom, laundry or outdoors?

Our wood barn doors are for indoor use only and are not suitable for outdoor or weather-exposed openings. In bathrooms, ensuites and laundries, sustained humidity above 80 per cent speeds up cracking and warping, and swelling or mould caused by humidity is not covered by the warranty. If you want a timber door in a wet area, choose a well-ventilated room, keep the finish fully sealed and keep the bottom edge away from standing water.
